Overview of the curriculum

The subject of Car Chassis Design is arranged to be taught after students complete basic technical subjects in the regular College training program in Auto Repair Technology at Thanh Phong Auto Technical Practice Training Center (in cooperation with Vietnam-USA College).

  • Duration: 1 credit (45 practice hours)

Position of the subject in the training program: This subject is built on the foundation of knowledge from basic engineering subjects, creating conditions for students to apply the knowledge they have learned to carry out in-depth projects on car chassis systems.

Course objectives

After completing the course Car Chassis Design, students will be able to:

Knowledge: Have knowledge of car chassis project implementation process.

Skills: Students can choose one of the following research directions and carry out projects:

  • Understand and calculate the traction of a car for a specific type of vehicle.
  • Understand the structure and working principles of automatic transmission (AT), continuously variable transmission (CVT) and dual clutch transmission (DCT).
  • Understand the structure and working principles of control and stability systems on cars (eg: active steering system AFS, 4WS; body stabilization system ESP).
  • Application of Labview and Matlab software in reading sensor signals and controlling cars related to chassis systems.
  • Construction of car chassis system model products.

Autonomy and responsibility:

  • Be aware of practicing independent and teamwork skills.
  • Responsible for keeping work areas clean and maintaining related equipment during and after use, and performing regular maintenance as required.

Main content of the curriculum

The subject of Automotive Chassis Project focuses on research and practice on transmission systems and control and stability systems of automobiles through the following chapters:

  1. Chapter 1: Automatic Transmission (25 hours): In-depth study of the operating principles of torque converters, planetary gear trains, brakes, clutches and one-way joints, power transmission and gear shifting control systems.
  2. Chapter 2: CVT gearbox (5 hours): Learn about the structure, classification and operating principles of continuously variable transmissions.
  3. Chapter 3: Dual Clutch Transmission (5 hours): Study the structure, classification and operating principles of dual clutch transmission.
  4. Chapter 4: Active Steering System AFS, 4WS (5 hours): Learn the operating principles of Active Front Steering and 4 Wheel Steering.
  5. Chapter 5: Vehicle stability system (5 hours): Study the structure, classification and working principle of the electronic stability program (Electronic Stability Program – ESP).

Specialized classroom/workshop: Study and work space with car chassis models and good ventilation system.

Equipment and machinery:

  • Models of sections and disassembly of car chassis systems (eg: various types of gearboxes, steering systems, suspension systems).
  • Standard auto repair tool kit.
  • Specialized testing and diagnostic equipment for chassis systems.
  • Projectors and computers support the research and presentation process.

Learning materials, tools, raw materials:

  • Lubricants, lubricants and cleaning solutions for parts.
